Tampered Beer Warning Issued For T.O. Bars And Restaurants
Friday July 13, 2007
CityNews.ca Staff
They were only sold in bars and restaurants, but that hasn't stopped the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) from putting out a warning about a popular brand of beer that may have been tampered with.
Authorities can't say for sure why someone altered several bottles of Stella Artois made by Labatt Breweries of Canada. But for reasons they may never know, somebody poured concentrated alcohol into several of the glass containers and put an extra label over the neck. Several people who drank the altered product threw up after consuming the spiked drinks, and there are fears there may be other bottles sitting on shelves out there.
The CFIA says the problem is localized only to Toronto and Kamloops, B.C. and that the affected suds came in 330 millilitre bottles with "best before" dates of November and December 2005, and product codes L32343T and L35243G.
The drink has long since expired and the agency doesn't know how or why they were reintroduced into the marketplace. The warning doesn't extend to cans or draft beer, and doesn't affect the brand sold at beer or liquor stores.
The government watchdog, which oversees food safety in Canada, is asking restaurant and bar owners to be especially vigilant about what they're serving and to contact authorities if the tampered goods turn up in their outlets.
Labatt's is working with police and the agency to discover who made the changes and why. If you have questions about this beer bottle baffler, call Labatt's at 1-800-268-BEER (2337) or the CFIA between 8am and 8pm EDT at 1-800-442-2342.
