Poverty does exist here,.. of course not as bad as in our countries,. but it does exist,.. other thing is that the system is better and as Daeveed said you have to take advantage of what u get in this  country,.and u are right about the relatives comment,. and it is because of the system we live in,. here everything is faster,. everyone is spread out, and some  r not here... eventhough i have seen families who still gathered every sunday,..

We or our families choose to immigrate for different reasons but one similar goal and it is to get a better life in a country with more oportunities,.

I think moving to Canada does not necessarily (or automatically) make one a better person. But I think Canada definitely can give you the potential to improve yourself as a person, given the exposure to so many different things (good and bad) that you get in contrast with what you saw back home.

There are also more opportunities if you know how to play your cards well.

However, I believe the values one is raised with, and the things one learns while growing up are the most defining factor in how much potential one has to be a "better person", even though the term is super subjective. All the things we are exposed to when we move here, are going to affect everybody in different manners.

For example, let's take the racial issue. In latin america there is not nearly as much diversity as there is here, we grew up among mostly latinos, and any person of a different race was looked at as an oddity (not necessarily in a bad way). Now after all that mono-racial upbringing, coming to Canada was surely a shock for most of us (especially for the ones who came here after their teens), and here is the part where the individual choices play a factor in deciding whether we become a "better" or a "worse" person. At the sight of the wide range of skin colours and backgrounds, some might become very intersted in learning about them all, considering this a wonderful learning and enriching experience; while others might freak out and limit themselves to fall into predetermined stereotypes (like the ones we grew up with), and close themselves to their own race, deeming all the other ones as being "crap" for different reasons.

Like this, there are other things about Canada, that can certainly offer you the opportunity to become "better" or "worse", like the weather, safety, money, politics, etc....

To me, it's all a matter of how do you take these changes, and how do you use them to your own advantage or betterment. We are social beings, and we must remember that, especially when moving to a country like this one.

....but it has most certainly made me richer....

I have to agree with Miel 100% on this one.  I don't think it made me better coming to Canada, but I have learned a lot from other cultures including the different range of latinos we have.  I mean I didn't know what a pupusa was. Now I can't believe what I was missing. LOL

I mean I love Mexico and always will,  but I don't see myself living there anymore. Its hard to explain.

I agree the most with McO and Miel's answers.  Being in Canada has helped me to learn more in depth about different cultures, situations, etc.  At times I wish I was back home, but one thing I realized, we obviously have an amazing time when we go back there as visitiors.  Everyone caters to you.  But when you actually live there and have to struggle there, it's different.  There are more opportunities here for my kids and I, so I dont see myself going to live back home anytime soon.  But visiting, I want to do so as much as I can.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDER WHY?? ITS SIMPLE U HAVE THE AMERICAN DOLLAR!!!!

Yeah, being raised in Nicaragua was the best thing that could ever happen to me: there's no crime, poverty, racial or class discrimination and everybody believes in El Niño Dios.

Oh, and it rains candy bars and milkshakes.

And tomatoes

I so hate it when people don't answer questions con la seriedad que el tema merece.

I think coming to Canada has given me a lot of things but I 've also lost others. Can't have everything in life. Canada does not make u a better person, u follow the same values as your family ( Mother & Father), your family is your biggest influence. Canada did help me in opening more doors for me n also give me the opportunity 2 growth as a productive citizen in society so I can help those around me.

I don't think that coming to Canada made me a better person,. but it made me more open minded to other cultures,. to apreciate in another level the differences as individuals,... and now I think I can live anywhere around the world,.
